nPower Football League U13 Girls Cup

For the second year running Sponne School were representing the Cobblers in the area finals and were hoping to progress further than they did in last year's area final at Barnet.

After the year 7 & 8 girls received two training sessions from our Women's and Girls Football Development Officer, Steve Healy, the girls had a confident attitude going into the tournament. Steve Healy also commented saying; 'The standard within the County has definitely improved from last year and I believe the girls will make a good account for themselves going into the area final.'

This year's area final was held at MK Dons, Woughton-on-the-Green, where the Cobblers where to face schools that were representing the likes of Watford, MK Dons, Stevenage, Barnet, West Ham, Oxford Utd, Colchester Utd, Ipswich Town, and Wycombe Wanderers.

Sponne Schools organisation and team work were superb through the tournament, as it proved that the school were a difficult team to beat. However, the downfall proved to be not scoring enough goals as Sponne finished joint second in their group, but missed out on a place into the semi-finals to Barnet by a goal difference of 2.

The eventual winners of the area final where Watford who beat Oxford Utd on penalties in a close fought game.

Steve Healy commented; 'The girls made an excellent effort where some good football was played, Northampton Town FC are very proud of how the players conducted themselves and were just unfortunate not to progress, but that is football sometimes.'

On behalf of everyone at NTFC we would like to congratulate Sponne School and look forward to seeing them again in our County competition again next season.
